Abstract

Permanent magnet (PM) machines have been widely employed for many applications due to high torque density and high efficiency. However, relatively high cost and potential supply issue of rare-earth magnets are major concerns. Rare-earth magnet-free machines are being seriously considered and investigated all over the world. Conventional electrical machines, such as induction, switched reluctance, synchronous reluctance and wound field synchronous machines, are being re-examined. New and novel electrical machines without rare-earth magnets are being developed, as will be overviewed in this presentation. This presentation will focus on the development of new operation principles, novel machine topologies, advanced power electronics inverters, and control strategies.
